Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back to the start of the new school year and I hope you all had a good summer break.

I would like to welcome our new Reception children who will start next week on a part-time basis. We know that they will really enjoy growing as part of our school community.

Summer Weddings

Congratulations to Mr. Conlon who got married this summer.

New Staff

I would like to welcome Miss Frances Finding who is our Reception teacher this year, covering Miss Phillips' maternity leave. Miss Philips and Miss Finding are teaching the class together for the first few weeks of term.

Mrs. Angela Serle and Mrs. Rony Fernandez have also joined the team as Teaching Assistants. They will help to provide even better teaching of reading and support for children in the key areas of learning.

Start of Year Parent Information Sessions

These short information sessions are taking place from 3pm in each class. In these sessions information will be shared about expectations for the school year and other important information. Reception, Year 2 and Year 6 have already held their meetings. Dates are in Dates for Diaries.

IMPORTANT Reporting Absence

Can I remind parents that if their child is absent, they must telephone the school so we can ensure all children are in school or safely at home. If we have not received contact regarding an absence by 9.30am, we have no alternative but to record the pupils absence as unauthorized, which could result in further action being taken.

Updated security arrangements

To improve site security we will now be locking the playground gates from 9.05am each day until 3.25pm. We apologise for any inconvenience and appreciate your cooperation in leaving the playground as quickly as possible.

Prospective Parents Tours

There will be tours for prospective parents for September 2015. The dates are:

       Tuesday 23rd September at 10am
       Wednesday 1st October            at 2pm
       Wednesday 8th October at 10am
       Thursday 16th October at 2pm

Staff Training Days (school closed)

As you know two training days have already been planned for this term. A third has been planned for the last day of the summer term Monday 20th July 2015. This means the school year will end on Friday 17th July 2015.

We hope to share the dates of the other two training days soon.

Sponsored Bike Rides

At the end of July I cycled from Bristol to Whitby on the coast of the North Yorkshire Moors; cycling over 350 miles over 5 days.

Angus Wallace, now in Year 5, cycled from Bristol to Radstock and back; an amazing distance of 50 miles in one day. Angus is only 9 years old!

We both decided to use our journeys as opportunities to raise money for St. Peter's Hospice. St Peters Hospice is a Bristol charity caring for adults with life-limiting illnesses. They aim to improve the quality of their living and dying while extending care and support to their families and loved ones.

St Peters Hospice cared for our caretaker Nick Buck's wife, Sonia, who passed away in November of last year. Sonia had been battling cancer for some time and received a wonderful level of care at St Peter's Hospice.

We have sent home sponsor forms and a Just Giving site can be found on:

We appreciate any support you can give. A big thank you to all who have already donated. So far we have raised £80. More sponsor forms are available outside the school office.

School Attendance

I am pleased to announce that in 2013-14, our attendance rose to 96.3% (including Reception who had amazing attendance). Although weve had a better year of attendance, it is still a concern, especially where:

Parents have taken children out of school for holidays or extended family visits.
Too many children are missing school for lots of odd days.

As you know, from last September, Headteachers may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances. Absences can only be authorised in exceptional circumstances.

The school has done its best to work with parents, and we have resisted taking action such as fining because we want to maintain good relationships and we always want to behave in a reasonable manner. Overall, this approach has been successful.

However, it would not be reasonable for children to be missing school for such reasons on an annual basis. If children who have missed school for extended periods this year, also miss extended periods next year(as unauthorised absences), we have no choice but to take further action, which is very likely to be issuing a fine.

Also, can I request that parents and carers do not take children out of school due to illness, when it is actually for another reason. Often in these cases, children tell their friends or members of staff another reason why theyve been off school. In such cases, we have no choice but to request written confirmation for any absence. Without written confirmation absences cannot be authorised.
