Friday 26 June 2015

Dear Parents/Carers,

First Holy Communion

Can the governors, staff and pupils of St Joseph’s wish all the children receiving their First Holy Communion on Sunday a happy and holy day.

Sports Day

Weather permitting, sports day will take place on the field between 9.30am and 12pm and parents/guardians, friends and governors are all very welcome to come and support the children.

Topic Presentations

These are short presentations where the children tell the story of their learning in their most recent topic. In the summer we also invite parents into class, following the presentation, for 20 minutes, to look at their child’s work. Dates are in the calendar.

Music Tuition

Letters were sent out to parents this week for the current Years 2-5 to book a place for their child to learn an instrument from September. There are spaces available to learn the guitar, violin, Brass, Drum and Keyboard.  Please ensure that a completed slip and the first instalment of £93.50 are returned to the school office by Monday 29th June.

Children Being Collected Late

Can I also remind parents and carers that the school day ends at 3.30pm. We appreciate that occasionally children are collected late due to unforeseen circumstances.  However, there are some children who are collected late on a regular basis.

Thank you for your support.

Using the Internet at home and E-Safety Week

This week an issue was reported where a 7 year child was asked to share very inappropriate information with a stranger on the Internet. The child was playing a game at home with her sister and fortunately she reported the incident to her teacher during our 'In the Beginning' Sex and Relationships Education Week. It is positive that the child shared this with her teacher but parents were very concerned that the incident was not shared with them. The incident has been reported to the police and we have spoken again to children in all classes.

In particular it is still a concern that children do not recognise that people can lie about their identify on the Internet and that such people can pose a threat.

In September we will be introducing a new improved E-Safety policy for children and will be planning some information sessions for parents.

New ‘Schoolgateway’ – online credit and debit card payments

Thank you to all the parents who have already signed up for the ‘Schoolgateway’.  Parents and carers can now pay for school dinners and Extended School Club using this payment method. We will be using it to pay for school trips and music tuition lessons as well very soon.  If you are having problems signing up or you just want some help then please contact the school office and they will be happy to help you.  Problems signing up are generally because we don’t have your correct email and mobile phone information. We would encourage you to try out the ‘Schoolgateway’, either using the app or from the ‘Schoolgateway’ website, as it will make paying for school items quicker and easier for you and the school!

Dear Parents/Carers,

A Special Message from Mr. Condon

After 8 years as Headteacher, 16 years as a member of staff and almost 40 years after I first joined St. Josephs as a 4 year old pupil, I am finally leaving the school this Christmas.

I have been appointed as the Headteacher of School of Christ the King in Knowle West and will begin my new role in January 2016.

This has obviously not been an easy decision to make as  St. Joseph's is an incredible school which has given me so much. However, this is the right time for me to move on and a great opportunity for a new Head to lead our great team onto even better things.

With 6 months still to go there is lots of work to be done; working hard to ensure children do their best every day, but also supporting school governors with the preparation for a new Headteacher.

It's not goodbye yet and I'm really looking forward to my last Summer, Autumn and Christmas at St. Joseph's!

Yours sincerely,

Matt Condon

New 'Schoolgateway' – online credit and debit card payments
All parents and carers have received a letter this week with information about our new online payment system ‘Schoolgateway’. You can now make online payments for school dinners using the ‘Schoolgateway’ smartphone app or website.  We hope this will be a faster and easier way for you to pay for school items. If you are having trouble logging on, this is because we don’t have your current email address or mobile phone number on record. So if you have any problems using this system please contact the school office who will be happy to help you get set up on ‘Schoolgateway’.

INSET Day

Just a reminder that the school will be closed to pupils on Friday 19th June for staff training.

‘In the Beginning’ - Education in Personal Relationships

Next week your child will be having lessons on ‘Education in Personal Relationships’, which includes sex education. We follow ‘In the Beginning’, a programme recommended by Bishop Declan and the diocese.

‘In the Beginning’ is a wholly Catholic Life Education programme covering Years 1-6 and includes sex education as a key element of the scheme. The programme consists of a carefully structured series of pupil workbooks, which will be completed in school and then brought home.
The children will grow to recognise love (in its many forms), as central to Christian philosophy and as the basis of all meaningful human relationships.

A parents’ information letter about the unit they will be covering will be sent home with your child this week.

If any parent has any concerns or would just like to find out more about the programme, Mrs Bell will be happy to speak to you and share the whole programme with you.

Sun Protection and Summer Footwear
The weather is currently wonderful which means the children have been able to use the school field more often. We advise that all children have a sun hat in school at all times. If you wish your child to put on sun cream in school, we also advise they have this in school every day, again clearly labelled with their name. They will need to put their own lotion on, so it might be better applying before school.

Sandals can be worn by children when the weather is hot and dry. Children should not wear sandals at other times as the playground is often wet.

Security

For security reasons, when children arrive late, we are unable to allow parents to escort their children to their classrooms.

Attendance

Well done to Y4 with 100% attendance and Y3 with 99% for the last week of term. Year 4 will have a special non-uniform day on Friday 12th June.

Gardening Club

There will be no gardening club next Monday 8th June.
