18th December 2009

Dear Parents and Carers,

School Security
We are doing our best to improve overall site security, whilst not losing the welcoming feel to the school.

One of the key issues is managing who enters the school through the front. At certain times of the day, many parents are visiting the school office, and it is difficult to manage who is in the school. To support us in making the site more secure we need to insist that:

All monies and correspondence be given to the class teacher in an envelope or posted through the post box in the school entrance.
All persons coming to the main entrance will need to come to the window first. Access will then be given when needed.

WE ASSURE YOU WE STILL WANT TO BE A WELCOMING SCHOOL BUT THE SAFETY OF CHILDREN MUST COME FIRST!

A newsletter in January will clarify what else we need to do to achieve improved security.

Free Brand New High Spec PC and one year internet access for low income families
A government initiative has been launched across the country to ensure that families on low incomes can have computer and internet access in their homes.

You could be entitled to a free home Computer and one year free broadband internet access if your child is in Keystage 2 or 3 AND your family fit one of the following criteria:
- Your child qualifies for free school meals
- You (as parents) are on income support OR receive income based job seekers allowance
- Have guaranteed pension credit OR have an income related employment support allowance
- Receive support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act

Dear Parents and Carers,

IMPORTANT - Supervision Before School and Site Security

Due to new guidance from Ofsted, the school is reviewing all practices regarding site security.

Responding to a number of immediate concerns, can I clarify the following –

Although the school does it’s best to provide supervision in the playground between 8.45 and 8.55, this cannot be guaranteed. The care and safety of learners must remain the responsibility of parents and carers, until children enter the school with their class at 8.55.
Adults can only enter the building through the main school entrance (with the exception of parents escorting their children into the Reception class). Please do not ask any members of staff or children to let you in through any other entrance.

Although we still strive to be a welcoming school, these measures obviously mean that we will be restricting access to the school building, to those who have been authorised by a member of staff. These measures are in place to ensure –

a) We can account for all persons on premises (in the event of a fire or other emergencies)
b) Nobody is in school who might pose a risk to children

Further updates regarding safety and safeguarding will be in the newsletter soon.

School Attendance – The following classes achieved over 95% attendance last week –Mr Sherwin’s class (for the 3rd week), Mrs Joseph’s class (for the 2nd week) and Mr Conlon’s class (for the 2nd week) with 100%!!!

Swine Flu - We have some children who are absent from school due to ‘flu like symptoms’. The latest advice regarding swine flu is that for most people it will be a mild illness that can be managed by resting, drinking plenty of fluids and taking paracetamol. If you have another health problem, or are concerned, you can ring the National Pandemic Flu Service on:
0800 1513 513 for information, or
0800 1513 100 for treatment.

Claiming for Free School Meals - If you are in receipt of Income Support or certain benefits your child is entitled to free school meals. To claim, please complete a form available from the school office. You will need to show us proof of your entitlement and then we will do the rest!

Dean Field Study Centre
- The December instalment for the Dean Field trip is now due. If you are paying by cheque please make it payable to Bristol City Council.

Sickness - If your child is absent, please telephone the school before 9.30am to let the office know the reason.

Dear Parents and Carers,

200 Club – St. Joseph’s Lottery supporting the children’s School Council
The school has for many years had its own form of the lottery, for which support has dwindled over the years.

Now for every £1 ticket bought, 50p will support projects planned by the children through their School Council! The other 50p will go towards the prize fund! You can buy as many as you like every month. The draw takes place once a month and the more people buy tickets the larger the prizes will be!!!

Recently this fund has supported the development of the new garden area, which will enhance the learning environment for all children.

If you would like to take part in our special lottery please see Mrs. Gossan in the school office – you can even buy tickets through standing order!

Christmas Lights in Forest Road
Every evening from the 1st December until the 6th January there will be a fantastic show of outdoor Christmas lights at 255 Forest Road. Also on Saturday 5th December until the 12th Father Christmas will be there from 4.30-6.30pm. Presents for the children are priced at £2.00 each. All money raised supports the British Heart Foundation and supports local people. Last year £2,600 was raised and the gaol for this year is £3,000 this year.

After School Clubs
We had some confusion following the Multi-Sports club earlier this week. This was mainly due to children and parents leaving the school through a variety of different exits and staff not being who had left school. To avoid confusion in future, nobody will be able to access the hall through the reception courtyard. All children must leave the hall via the main school entrance and be signed out by Mrs. Martin or another member of staff.

School Attendance –
The following classes achieved over 95% attendance last week - Miss Wright’s class, Mrs Ford’s class, Mr Sherwin’s class, Mrs Bell’s class

Dear Parent/Carer,

Religious Education – Other Faiths - Preparations

From Monday 16th November until Friday 20th November, pupils will study various aspects of Judaism for 1 week. Ask them what they have been learning about.

Also from Monday 23rd November until Friday 18th December the final topic of the term is Preparations. This topic takes us into our Advent season, a time to prepare for the celebration of Jesus’ birth at Christmas. The children will look at the importance of preparing for special events and how the Church gets ready for the coming of Jesus during Advent.

Suggestions for home activities

If appropriate, at home have an Advent Wreath or calendar to ‘countdown’ the time of preparing for Christmas.
Share together what you know about Advent as a season of the Church’s year.
Use the CAFOD or Mission Together website to get a religious Advent calendar.

If the pledge does not make its target of 500 people, then all those who have signed up will not need to fulfil their pledge and donate their money.

If you value the Farm and are in a position to support it by making the pledge, please visit the Farm’s page on the pledgebank website – the link is www/pledgebank.com/SaveWHCF and sign your name and e.mail address (only used to tell you when the pledge is completed and to contact you about the pledge). Dear Parent/Carer,

School Attendance and Lateness

What is the problem?

Disappointingly, last years the school attendance figures were lower than in previous years.

Attendance is a factor often linked to low levels of academic success. Pupils also have difficulty maintaining friendships if they have long or numerous periods of absence.

What is the school’s policy?

The school’s policy is that no more 10 days absence can be authorised in any academic year.

It is a parent’s legal responsibility to ensure their child is in school, and the School Governors have decided that the school must take action against parents and carers of children who are absent from school without authorisation.

Ongoing unauthorised absence could lead to a Penalty Notice! This is a fine of £50.00 if paid within the first 28 days and £100 if paid within 42 days. If the fine is not paid within 42 days parents could be prosecuted.

Lateness is also a significant problem. Children are expected to be in line, with their class, at 8.55am. Where children are persistently late the school will be contacting parents and carers immediately and taking appropriate action to ensure it does not continue.

We have to take tough action because poor attendance and lateness is damaging the learning of too many children in the school.

Yours sincerely,

Matt Condon, Headteacher

18th September, 2009.

Dear Parent/Carer,

Sorry, but this newsletter starts with a moan…

Lateness

This is already proving to be a big problem this term. In. Mrs. Ford’s class alone, 6 children were late this morning! Many others were late in other classes.

Where lateness is persistent the school will take appropriate action.

The school day starts when the children line up in the playground at 8.55am. All children who come in later will be marked in late.

Hoildays during Term Time

The schools overall attendance figures last year were disappointingly low.

The school’s policy on attendance is very clear: the school can authorise 10 days of leave for holidays during term time. However if absences are not authorised the school has no choice but to take action. This action may include referral to the Education Welfare Officer (who will then take further action) or a fixed penalty notice.

Absence due to Illness

Parents and Carers must contact the school office on the first morning of any absence due to illness.

Information About Learning

Dear Parent/Carer,

Information About Learning

One of our key priorities for school improvement this year is sharing more information about your child’s learning. This year topic plans and weekly overviews will be displayed in each class’s window: the topic webs at the start of each new topic and the weekly overviews at the start of each week. These are ‘plans’ and may the learning may change as the week progresses – so don’t panic if all areas of learning are not covered in a specific week. The hope is that this information will enable parents to talk to their children about their learning at home.

Reception 2010

The Admissions booklet and ‘Faith Form’ for reception 2010 will be available from the office as of Monday 14th September. It is very important that if you apply on-line that you wait for online confirmation of your application. (You also need to fill out a Faith Form for St Joseph’s which is available from the office).

2010 New Parents Tour

The dates for the new parents tour for children starting in September 2010 is Friday 25th September at 10.00am, or Monday 28th September at 2.00pm. Please contact the school office if you have a child stating school next year, and you would like to have a look around.

Pupil/Parent Concerns

If you have any concerns regarding your child/children’s welfare at school, or their learning please contact the school office to arrange an appointment with their class teacher. As Headteacher, I am always available to discuss concerns if they of a very serious nature, or if you feel your concerns have not been addressed by the class teacher. Please contact Mrs. Slade if you would like to make an appointment to see me.

Swine Flu Update

Attached is a letter from the Health Protection Agency up-dating parent/carer about swine flu.

School Meals

A reminder - school meals have gone up to £2.10 as from the start of term.

Parking on the Zig-Zag Lines

The Community Police Officers are now issuing on the spot £60 fines to cars parked on the zig zag lines.

Job Opportunity - SCHOOL MEALS SUPERVISORY ASSISTANT

Bristol Grade 2 £2066 - £2096 (Actual) 5.0 hours per week Term Time Only
The Governors of St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School are looking to employ a School Meals Supervisory Assistant to work 5 days a week (Mon-Fri) 1 hour per day (12.00 - 1.00pm) to assist a SEN child.

You will ideally be enthusiastic, energetic, flexible and be able to work as part of a team.

Application and job details are available from the school office. Applications close on the 18th September 2009.

Dates for Diaries

These will be published next week.

Yours Sincerely

Dear Parents/Carers

As the year comes to an end…

Welcome to the last newsletter of this academic year. It has been a year of challenge and success. All children have worked hard and are becoming even more successful in their learning. As our present year 6 cohort leave St. Joseph’s, I am very proud to share with you the standards they have achieved in English, Maths and Science –

English level 4+ = 90% (2007 = 77%, 2008 = 80%)
Maths level 4+ = 83% (2007 = 71%, 2008 = 79%)
Science level 4+ = 90% (2007 = 84%, 2008 = 80%)

Well done Year 6!

Also recently, the school received the silver SingUp award, being the first school in Bristol to do so. Congratulations to all children, staff members, and in particular Mrs. Marsh, for achieving this prestigious award.

Please check out the school blog for details of this and lots of other exciting examples of learning this year.

Looking towards the future…

Some of the key areas for school improvement next year, will be –

• Use knowledge of children’s needs more effectively to plan high quality learning experiences, which enable children to make good progress.
• Give children more responsibility for learning, supporting each other and making good progress.
• Sharing children’s learning journey with parents and carers so that they can support their children in making good progress.
• Improve attendance and punctuality.

Of course it’s the time of the year when we not only say goodbye to Year 6, but also some members of staff. Mr Tilmouth took over my class 2 ½ years ago when I suddenly became acting headteacher. He quickly settled into his first teaching post, built good relationships with colleagues, children and parents and demonstrated himself to be a good, focussed teacher, contributing much to the school community. We will all miss him, and wish him luck in his new life in Edinburgh.

I would like to thank you all for your all your hard work and support. We look forward to making 2009-2010 even better year of learning.

Have a safe and happy holiday.

Best wishes

2nd July 2009

2nd July 2009

Dear Parent/Carer,

A message from Maureen Tuohy, parent and governor -

I have always been proud to be a member of St Joseph’s School Community, and I felt especially proud at the PTFA’s Summer Festival.

The hard work of the PTFA produced a day which was buzzing with a holiday atmosphere and was enjoyed by all.

I felt really proud of the most important members of our community – the children of St Joseph’s. Their fabulous contributions of singing, cheerleading, dancing, inventive money making games and most of all HAVING FUN - made the day a great success!!!.

Well done. Proud parent and Governor.

Parental Behaviour in Playground

If adults witness something inappropriate happening in the playground, they should report the incident to the school immediately. Under no circumstances should a problem be dealt with by the parent directly, even if involves their own child.

Failure to follow these directives will result in a fixed term ban from the school grounds and buildings.

School Attendance

Here is the overall percentage attendance for this academic year –

Reception 91.5%
Year 1 92.5
Year 2F 94.8%
Year 2S 91.3%
Year 3/4M 93.1%
Year 3/4T 94.1%
Year 3/4B 94.7%
Year 5/6C 93.7%
Year 5/6P 94.4%
Year 5/6J 93.5%

Well done to all classes who achieved over 94%. Next year we need all classes to achieve over 95% attendance.

School Trips

I am happy to say that the trip to Weston and Longleat will be going ahead due to the majority of cost being funded by your contributions. Thank you all.

Bike Shelter

As some of you know, we are planning to build a second bike shelter. This is because of the large amount of children who are now cycling to school. Currently there is not enough room for all the bikes in the shed so children can store bikes behind the mobile classrooms if they wish. All school gates are locked 9.30am – 3pm.

Unfortunately the school cannot take responsibility for property stored on the school grounds.

School Meal Prices

From the 1st September the price of school meals will increase by 10p to £2.10. May I take this opportunity to remind you that dinner money is payable in advance on the first day of each week.

CRB Checked Volunteers

If you have been CRB checked as a volunteer in the school, please could you let Mrs Gossan in the office have the CRB disclosure number and the date of issue.

Mini Fair

On Wednesday 17th June, a mini fair took place in the school hall, where the year 5/6 used their stalls from the Summer Festival to raise money for subsidising the overall cost of the school trips. We managed to raise £230.00.

Year 6 Leavers

A reminder that a party has been organised by the ‘parents’ of year 6 leavers at St Joseph’s Pre School Hall on Friday 24th July – 6.30-9.30pm. Tickets can be purchased from the school office. Prices are £4.00 for a family ticket and £2.00 for an individual ticket. A list is in the office where parents can put their name alongside food they will be able to provide.

New Academic Year

The new academic year is due to start on Thursday 3rd September. This year the first two days of term (3rd and 4th September) will be used as staff training days. This means the children will start school on Monday 7th September.

Summer Social

Dear Parent/Carer,

PTFA Summer Festival

Last Saturday’s Summer Festival was a fantastic success. Can I please take this opportunity to thank all members of the PTFA, for the incredible amount of hard work and creativity put into this event. The plan was to organise a great family afternoon, and show the local community St. Joseph’s at its best! Can I also thank everybody else who contributed to this great day – especially children from Year 5/6 who planned, created and managed a great set of fun activities. Let’s look forward to summer 2010!

Also, attached is an order form for the PTA Summer Family Social.

School Trips

Several parents have commented on the note from Year 5/6s Mini-Festival, where it stated money raised would go into ‘school trip fund’. Can I reassure you all that any money raised is used to lower the overall cost of school trips for this group of children, and NOT subsidise payments not made for school trips.

Healthy Communities

Fishponds Old Boys FC who train at Forest Road Playing Field have been shortlisted for the Evening Post’s Building Healthy Communities competition, which gives local organisations and groups the chance to win a share of £8,000 worth of improvements. Fishponds Old Boys want to refurbish the shipping container they use as a changing room. For two weeks from Tuesday 16th June there will be a token and a voting voucher in each copy of the Evening Post, so if you can collect as many Building Healthy Communities tokens as you can and send them into school.
